Dr Maria Maher is a Senior Adviser at CEG Europe, based in Paris. She is a competition economist with more than 20 years’ experience and has particular expertise in the areas of abuse of dominance, damages, conduct and behavioural remedies, vertical and horizontal agreements, auctions, contracts and network access issues.

Maria’s experience spans a wide range of sectors including financial services, banking, telecommunications, energy, chemicals, transport, retail, technology, and professional services. She has advised clients and their legal advisers in several countries throughout the EU, USA, Canada, UAE, Algeria, Bangladesh and Malaysia.

Maria’s competition cases include an OFT/CMA Chapter 2 investigation in a two-sided market, follow-on and stand-alone damages claims, abuse of dominance cases in the telecoms and energy sectors in several EU countries, and abuse of dominance investigations across a wide range of sectors into contract provisions such as contract length, exclusivity, excessive pricing and other pricing practices such as volume discounts. She has also advised clients on stand- alone damages claims from alleged anticompetitive conduct before commercial courts, as well as commercial litigation disputes. Maria has additionally advised bidders in several 4G spectrum auctions.

Prior to joining CEG, Maria worked at KPMG where she was a Director of Competition Economics, AlixPartners where she led their competition economics practice, and NERA Economic Consulting’s auction practice in Washington DC and competition practice London.

Maria holds a PhD in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley, an MA in Economics and BA in Economics and Mathematics (double major) from Boston University.

Maria started her career as an academic and held positions at Birkbeck College and the University of Cambridge, where she was also a Fellow and Director of Studies in Economics at Christ’s College. Prior to consultancy, Maria was a Senior Economist at the OECD in Paris, where she led the organisation’s work on competition and economic performance.
